Perhaps knowing they are entering an ever-filling market, Space Punks will be launching as a free-to-play title. Downside is that the UI design ends up obscuring units making selection of them a bit tricky.Don’t worry though, it is still entirely playable in solo play. There is a UI and text scale option in settings to increase the UI size is a nice get, as that is often a major issue when PC games migrate to console, the UI is too small for couch-gaming. I would hate to even take a guess at the resolution and framerate of them, but it would not be good. The Campaign cutscenes and English voice work however leaves a lot to be desired. When the hulking metal beasts blow through a wall and debris flies, it looks great. Graphically the maps and machines are awesome. So, a failed push will result in a massive penalty in my time, resource gathering and development. But the save only goes back to the most recent checkpoint which in some cases for me where 15 or 20 minutes in the past. Before attempting a big push, the strategic minded gamer will do a quick-save. As the game has a very unfriendly check-point system. But the punishment for the wrong strategy is high. So planning is key….a certain “strategy” you could say. At Iron Harvest’s heart is the well proven Rock, Paper, Scissors units system. With various sizes and shapes to be developed as the base grows. The diesel-mechs are the star of the show. This meant the first hour or more of play was me re-learning my camera controls. Its control on the x-axis is the opposite of all other RTS’s I have played on console, with no way to change it in options. Baffling to me though, was the simple decision of the camera being inverted. Base building, enemy targeting and use of cooldowns is very manageable without mouse and keyboard. Iron Harvest is still great fun, even if the all important controller integration is less than intuitive. Unfortunately, Iron Harvest did not use either of them as guiding lights respectively. And Halo Wars created the must-use template for RTS controls on controller. Company of Heroes, granted is PC only, has one of the finest balances of in-game units in a RTS of this squad scale, combat space. Then the important lessons already learnt by those who came before, should also be adopted. But if a game is going to crib from the best in the space from the last few years. It could be argued, If it ain’t broke… and all that. Like resource gathering, base development and unit production is the same as any RTS I have played in the last 15 years. The diesel-punk units and setting are a fresh take for the genre, but the underlying systems. In essence it is a traditional close combat RTS, akin to Company of Heroes in scale of combat arenas and unit management. The mission structure and RTS unit development gameplay loop is identical to other RTS’s that have come before. We’ve been here before.Įach nation in Europe has its own campaign to play through with a great variety of missions. While also trying to save her genius father from the hands of the evil occupying Rusivet army. The human story at the games core, is about a ‘Joan of Arc-esque’ girl, who comes to lead a rag-tag group of Polania resistance fighters. Especially considering this is a RTS focused on iron-clan death dealing machines. I was pleasantly surprised by the standard of the story and characters. I have not covered it all, but I have played the main story campaign. I have to be honest, the only thing I wasn't truly a fan of was the mechanics of Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey. The whole idea of Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is to grow from a baby monkey to an adult one while exploring your environment, discovering new animals, objects and staying alive. As you discover different things, you grow as an ape. The game will prompt you to collect anything from leaves, berries, sticks and rocks. As you progress the game will give you quests, and it's up to you to figure how to complete them. To me, that gives me the feeling that something could attack me at any moment.Įventually, one of two things will happen You will randomly hide somewhere and switch to an adult gorilla or you'll randomly find where you need to go as a baby monkey. If Hyenas start appearing at anytime, that means the area you're in is unfamiliar or you haven't been there before. So, I started walking around the jungle, and as I explored, silouettes of Hyenas start appearing. Even as a grown adult, I get anxious if I don't know where I'm going. You are a small baby monkey all alone in a jungle and are supposed to find your family. The dialogue literally tells you that you're on your own. You start as a baby monkey and are literally dropped into a jungle that's dark, eerie and unnerving. To this core group are many other fully-fledged individuals, who have been added and developed throughout the series. She does seem to have a propensity for impractical footwear. Her shoes talk to her, making many pithy observations. She’s sporting a large chip on her shoulder and snips accordingly. Grace gets incensed rather easily and bluntly says rather tactlessly many a declaration. She is a woman who has come from poverty and worked very hard to earn a degree from Botswana Secretarial College, with a grade of 97%, which is loudly and proudly proclaimed at every opportunity. Precious decides she needs a secretary and in steps Grace Makutsi, a prickly pear, a stickler for rules and grammar. RELATED: FATHER BROWN (2013 -) SERIES REVIEW -A WHIMSICAL, LIGHT-HEARTED ENGLISH MYSTERY SERIES Although he is often exasperated by them. He is generous, almost to a fault at times, and gives his young apprentices, Charlie and Fanwell, very long leashes. He is a traditional man himself, honorable, proper. He is rather smitten with her from the get-go, and their gentle romance is a thread throughout the series. With her vehicle chronically needing help to keep driving, she befriends and is befriended by the mechanic Mr. Precious steadily builds a network in Gaborone. This is a woman who always takes her time, having just another cup of tea to ponder and think. No one would ever accuse Mma Ramotswe of being fast-paced. And besides the traditional build, she is also a traditional lady, often ruminating on the changing of ways in her homeland, on the traditional ways that are being lost in this fast-paced, electronic age. I did mention that she is a traditionally built woman. She insists on driving her dear departed Daddy’s van, despite it always being in need of repair and chronically listing to one side. Furthermore, Precious is wise beyond her years, listens with all her heart, savors her bush tea and always says yes please to an extra slice of cake. And she’s got her gumption, her steadfastness, her good humor, her compassion, her curiosity, and her wisdom. She has no professional training as such, but she’s got her detecting Bible – a dogeared copy of Clovis Andersen’s The Principles of Private Detection – which she liberally cites in book after book. Following her dear Daddy’s death, she takes her inheritance and moves to Gaborone to start up The No. Mma Precious Ramotswe, the first female detective in Botswana, is a character you quickly come to love. So, here’s why you should be reading Alexander McCall Smith’s The No. She is utterly loveable, and the books are pleasurable beyond measure. Because there is something so eminently likable and relatable and aspirational about Mma Precious Ramotswe. And if you’re looking for some summer reading, well, perhaps I can convince some to pick up a book or two about the traditionally built Botswanan detective, Mma Precious Ramotswe. So, in celebration of this milestone, I’ve decided to try and sum up the appeal of this series. And to top it all off, the twentieth book in the series is set to land on shelves in September 2019! RELATED: AGATHA AND THE TRUTH OF MURDER: A FUN DRAMATIZED BIOGRAPHY Since then, the series has proved to be immensely popular. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency was the title, and the world was introduced to the most precious of number one lady detectives, namely Precious Ramotswe. Over twenty years ago, in 1998, the first novel in Alexander McCall Smith’s latest series was published. In 2008 Kounios and his colleagues monitored the brain activity of 26 study participants using electroencephalography (EEG) while they sat quietly in a room. Both methods are useful, but insight is typically seen as the best option for “out of the box” solutions. Answering questions with analysis involves finding solutions through deliberate, methodical trial and error, whereas insight is perceived as an abrupt epiphany. Roughly speaking, people solve problems in one of two ways: they either tend to rely on moments of insight, or they prefer to approach them analytically. Brain research has revealed that we can all get closer to achieving that magical spark of insight with the help of a few simple techniques. These innovative individuals have a distinct style of thinking, and breaking down their approach can allow anyone to re-create the process. And creativity is not restricted to a subset of highly talented artists and thinkers, Carson says. These stages really seem to be universal, whether you are a scientist, artist, writer or musician,” says Harvard University psychologist Shelley Carson, who has interviewed more than 1,000 creative individuals for her research. For example, preparation now consists of two parts, one involving general learning and the other more focused on skill building. Since then, scientists have broken some of his stages into substages to reveal distinct cognitive processes. In 1926 political scientist Graham Wallas defined the creative process as four distinct stages: preparation, incubation, illumination and verification. What researchers are finding is that the contemporary science of creativity largely bolsters an almost century-old theory. “A story is emerging about all the factors that lead up to an insight,” says cognitive psychologist John Kounios, who studies creativity at Drexel University. Scientists view these flashes of insight as markers of the creative process-and observing them in the laboratory elucidates what happens in the brain during problem-solving. Using this piece, along with other hidden-object images, I investigated how an individual’s focus and attention change when experiencing an unexpected revelation.įor centuries creative individuals have described their sudden breakthroughs, instances when they are able to recombine information in a new and useful way. Enns’s vision laboratory at the University of British Columbia in 2013 that I had my own abrupt realization: I recognized how my art could inform science. It was only after joining psychologist James T. I had designed the piece to portray the idea that our brain’s neural networks make us who we are. I painted Neurons a few years ago for an art exhibit. These aha! moments occur when your brain spontaneously reinterprets information to reach a novel, nonobvious conclusion. You may have felt a similar jolt when discovering the solution to a math problem, understanding a joke or metaphor, or realizing something unexpected about yourself. If so, you have just had a moment of insight. What do you see? Just a neural network? Perhaps you spotted the hidden figure. Take a moment to look at the image above. Moreover, the program optimizes videos to be played on Mac. Since QuickTime has been Apple’s default multimedia player for Mac devices, it’s compatible with all the files you’ve purchased from iTunes or Apple TV. Currently, QuickTime is available for use on Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10. However, the use of plug-ins is primarily meant for Mac users, since the Windows version doesn’t receive any updates. Since the program is backed by Apple, it supports various plug-ins to provide you with more features and options. All the media files you use with the player can be directly uploaded to social media websites, such as Facebook, Vimeo, and Youtube. You can even use ‘QuickTime Broadcaster’ to stream live videos. QuickTime supports many other features, including the ability to record your PC’s screen. As such, this program can be used as a simple video editor to share clips online. Additionally, the tool comes with some basic video editing features, which let you rotate, trim, split, and merge video clips. Apart from video file formats, you can use QuickTime to play images, audio, and other content. QuickTime has always been popular for its multiple features, especially the ones available in the Pro version. That said, though, if you're looking for a simple, functional, and feature-packed multimedia player on your computer, QuickTime download will be a good choice. Unfortunately, while it remains a must-use app for Apple users, the development of the Windows version has taken a backseat. Even now, QuickTime comes pre-installed with Mac computers and receives regular updates. However, some next-gen programs like VLC and KMPlayer have competed pretty hard with Apple’s default software. Basic video editing, live streaming, and moreįor almost a decade, QuickTime was one of the most prominent multimedia players. Surviving the Aftermath does not have a narrative campaign however, players can customize the world, such as choosing the level of destruction, resources available and leader ideology. The most recent DLC, Shattered Hope, released in November 2022, has just 21 reviews on Steam, with a whopping 19 being negative I feel it’s time for Iceflake Studios to move onto something else before their reputation is tarnished beyond repair. This could signal that development on Surviving the Aftermath will end within the next 12 months. I am a fan of Frostunk, so that is saying something!Īs of February 2023, Surviving the Aftermath has two DLV available, both of which suffer from low review scores and low sales. Unfortunately, the overreliance on RNG ensures that Surviving the Aftermath is, at times, punishingly difficult regardless of the difficulty setting, making it one of the most artificially difficult games I have ever played. While there is room to better your strategies and management technic, the learning curve is approachable for new players and casuals alike. Surviving the Aftermath is not difficult to learn. You may not be able to control everything in your colony, but how you respond to situations and emergent events will shape the character of your new civilization.Surviving the Aftermath began out as a promising title however, two years of overdevelopment has reduced what was an excellent title, to a merely passable one.
Thank you doesn’t seem enough, but it is my sincerest way of letting you know how much I care. It humbles me to realize the sacrifices you and your family endure. “Dear Veteran, Words cannot express how proud I am to honor those heroes like you, who choose to serve their Country. Room does not permit me to list all the letters the veterans received. Take a look at this video to see what I mean. It was a vivid reminder of their service to the country for which they’d risked their lives. The mail call session proved to be one of the highlights of the trip for many of the veterans. As they read the letters, the veterans basked in the love and admiration expressed by appreciative Americans. Those selected letters were presented in book form to each of the 25 veterans. That’s why mail call is such a special time in the life of an active-duty soldier. It’s an essential morale booster for troops. In the meantime, letters from loved ones help fill the void. But they also long for the day when they can return home safely to family and friends. And will do so to the best of their abilities. This is especially true for those in military service around the world. When you’re away for an extended period of time, any reminder of home is cherished. The necessary connection to a PC I have the need to develop things in Visual Studio.Net, and using the Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac to connect to my PC proved to be to too slow (over a 100 Mbit LAN), definitely a lot more sluggish than the equivalent Remote Desktop Connection built in to Windows XP. This might be because I normally use the ergonomic Microsoft Natural MultiMedia Keyboard. The keyboard I really like the look of the white keyboard, and it’s as nice to touch as patting a puppy, but in the long run I didn’t like typing on it. However, the things that bothered me was: Dialogs Since I’m really a keyboard shortcut freak, not being able to tab in dialogs beween “Save”, “Don’t save” and “Cancel” was really annoying. Some more cynical people would say that it is a case of “knowing your enemy”, but that’s definitely not the way I see it, I was just very interested.
